Whispering City is set between 1912 and 1917, in northern Greece, Dublin, London, Lemnos and Gallipoli. Three divisive and destructive wars sweep through the territory in rapid succession, but for three young women these uncertain times present an opportunity to escape their fettered pasts and seize the lives they want.
When they meet Titos, journalist and owner of an international bookshop in central Salonika, Yael, a Sephardi bride, Brigid, an Irish nurse in the British Army, and Melina, a Greek singer, each begin to navigate their crossings of borders set by culture and tradition, and to explore new freedoms in education, literature, and love. Greece enters WW1 deeply politically divided, and Salonika, soon flooded with the armies of the Entente, is riven with mistrust and betrayal. As the secret lives they have constructed are threatened, the women stand to lose everything they have fought for.
